China -- Description and travel

Joseph LeRoy Dodds (1891 - 1973) worked in India as a Presbyterian missionary in 1917, and in 1932, Dodds was appointed secretary of the India Council of the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions, and four years later he became secretary of the Board itself. The collection (1917-1958) contains correspondence and notes pertaining to trips Dodds made to China, the Near East, and Iran, as well as to his early experiences in India as teacher and instructor at the seminary.

Mrs. Everitt Groff-Smith (1892 - ), whose father and husband served as commissioners in China, wrote an autobiography that includes information about life in China. The collection (circa 1892-1941) consists of her autobiography.

Edith Ashmore (Hensolt) (1882-1975) was born in China to Baptist missionaries, and she later graduated from Vassar, became a librarian, and traveled widely. The collection (1896-1999) contains diaries, extensive personal correspondence, recollections and photographs of travel to Hawaii, Japan, China, and California.

Henry B. Miller was part owner of the vast Miller and Lux Cattle Co, and he may have served in the military or in the Foreign Service during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The collection (1898-1908) consists of correspondence, consular letters and reports regarding Russia and China, and photographs.

Clifton Pease (1884-1937) was a Seattle publicist, and radio program writer with a special interest in Asia. The collection contains radio scripts and interviews, diaries from when Pease served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (1917-1919), and a diary from a trip to Japan, Korea, and China (1929), 1917-1938.

Abbie Ella Stoughton (later Stearns) was the daughter of Joseph Hibbard Stoughton, a Washington pioneer from New England. Her diary documents her travels from England to Asia and New York as well as travels in the Pacific Northwest and her appointment as enrolling clerk of the House, Washington Territorial Legislature.
