Abstract Joseph Gragg came overland to Oregon from Illinois in 1852 when he was 25 years old. He settled on a farm near Monroe and married Levina Buckingham, who came to Oregon with her family in 1846 via the southern route, led by Jesse Applegate. The Gragggs had eight children, three of whom died in childhood; the five surviving children were Thomas Heman, Betsey M.., James Phile, David Vernon, and Marcus Edward. Hallock was born in Utica, New York. He trained as a cabinet maker, draftsman, surveyor, and civil engineer and became one of Portland's earliest contractors.
