William C. Gleim letters
William C. Gleim was an enlisted man from Chicago during the Philippine-American War (Philippine War of Independence), probably in the 1st Illinois Battalion. The collection (1899) contains correspondence written from Gleim to his parents from the transport ship Sherman en route to the Philippines, and from Luzon.
Edwin William Hampton correspondence
Edwin William Hampton, from Portland, Oregon, a private in Company H, Oregon Volunteer Infantry, is said to have been the first Oregon soldier killed in the Spanish-American War's Philippines campaign. The letters, with few exceptions, are to and from family members. During the war Hampton was at Presidio, Calif., and in Manila, P.I.
