Sketches

Clarence William Anderson (1891 - 1971) specialized in the writing and illustrating of books about horses, most of them for children. The collection (1963-1968) contains lithographs, dummies, pencil sketches, crayon drawings, and prints for three children's books.

Frank C. Bensing (1893 - ) from Chicago, was an illustrator, designer, and portrait painter, who worked for New York advertising agencies, and was published in popular magazines. The collection (1926-1951) contains professional and personal correspondence, original illustrations, and biographical information.

Verne Bright (1893 - ) was an Oregon author of poetry who also worked as a newspaper reporter, and as an English teacher. The collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, memorabilia, genealogy research, sketches, scrapbooks, and publications.

Bullfrog Information Service was a magazine published in Eugene, Oregon, from June, 1971 till February, 1972, that focused on news and articles for and about the Northwest alternative community. The collection contains correspondence, advertising and distribution records, eight published issues and one unpublished, original illustrations and advertising art, financial records, and unpublished articles and poetry.

Eugene (Gene) Carr (1881-1959) became a commercial artist and cartoonist, and he worked for King Features, McClure's, and the George Matthew Adams syndicates. The collection contains original cartoons (undated), advertisement sketches, and correspondence.

Sketches of political cartoons concerning city and county issues which appeared in various issues of the Eugene Register-Guard newspaper.

James Daugherty (1889-1974) was a muralist, author, and illustrator who won the Newbery Medal in 1940 for his children's book, Daniel Boone, and was a runner-up for two Caldecott Medals. The collection is primarly comprised of artwork, but also includes manuscripts and other writings (including several by Sonia Daugherty and Charles Daugherty), correspondence, notebooks and sketchbooks, news clippings and ephemera, and photographs.

Edwin Willard Deming (1860-1942) was an American sculptor, illustrator and writer who lived among Native American tribes when he was young and then dedicated his career to artistically recording and portraying them accurately and with dignity. The collection consists of his correspondence, drawings, sketches, and paintings, as well as anthropological and linguistic material, notes and other documentation of tribes he visited or lived with.

Clare Victor Dwiggins (1874-1958) was an author, illustrator, and syndicated cartoonist. The collection (1932-1958) consists of manuscript illustrations, sketches and drawings, WWII posters, publicity, books, and biographical material.

C. Peter Helck (1893-1988) was a writer and illustrator who became most known for his automobile and racecar illustrations. The collection contains original artwork, sketches, illustrations, correspondence, manuscripts, publications, photographs, and tearsheets.

David Hendrickson, 1896- 1973, was an artist, freelance advertiser, and illustrator of children's literature. This collection documents Hendrickson's' entire career and reflects his interest in the individual person and his ability to capture this in his art.

James Rorty (1890-1973) was an American writer and poet who tackled subjects such as American industries, Joseph McCarthy, labor, medicine, nutrition, advertising, and Jim Crow. The collection (1915-1972) contains James Rorty's literary manuscripts, journals, correspondence, memoirs, and photographs as well as manuscripts and correspondence by Rorty's sisters, the writers Eva Beard and Marion Bullard.

Wallace Smith (1888-1937) was a newspaperman, novelist, and artist. The papers include Smith's manuscripts and published pieces, minor correspondence, drawings and illustrations, photographs, and miscellaneous documents.

Henry R. Stern (1874-1966) was a music composer and music publishing executive. The collection contains correspondence, music manuscripts, phonograph recordings, composition and copyright lists, biographical material, and scrapbooks.

Umpqua Academy Association was composed of former students and graduates of the Umpqua Academy, a Methodist school located in Wilbur, Oregon. The collection (1874-1930) contains Association correspondence and programs, a photograph of the school bell, gathered historical papers including legal documents, and sketches of the school and grounds.

Melville Wire was the son of a Methodist minister from Mt. Tabor (Portland), Oregon, and was a student at the University of Oregon from 1895-1896, and Albany College in 1897. The collection (1894-1897) consists of diaries.
