Pioneers -- Oregon

John Smith Griffin (1807–1899) was an Oregon pioneer and missionary. The collection consists of promissory notes from Griffin to fellow missionary Harvey Clark for a South Tualatin land claim.

A. J. Grover wrote a letter dated April 18, 1863, to Edwin Beebe, of Placerville, Idaho to say that he had been delayed by Indians and it was too late for best market in Placerville; he also quotes prices in mining towns.

J. K. Guttry (1869 - ?), of rural Sheridan, Oregon, became a teacher and worked in in Harmony, Oregon. The collection (1889-1891) contains Guttry's diary.

Hallock was born in Utica, New York. He trained as a cabinet maker, draftsman, surveyor, and civil engineer and became one of Portland's earliest contractors. The journal describes his experiences on the coast, daily transactions and experiences during construction jobs. He fished, trapped, observed the weather, visited, and was visited.

James Watson Hamilton was a circuit judge at Roseburg, and a member of the Board of Regents at the University of Oregon. His diary details his work as a clerk in the law office of S.H. Hazard of Empire City,and his later partnership with Hazard. Folder also contains a bill from the Alcona Lodge for the year 1890.

John Jacob Handsanker was a Christian Church minister, organizer of Portland Community Chest, director of Armenian and Syrian relief, and Northwest secretary of the National Council for Prevention of War. Collection includes a typed autobiography, notebooks of recollections, typed family history, and several typed family letters.

Sam "Uncle Sam" Handsaker was an Oregon pioneer and veteran of the Rogue River Indian Wars. The collection consists of a typed copy of "Across the Plains," which is a transcription of a section of Handsaker's journal (1853).

The Hedden family, owners of the Hedden Store in Scottsburg, Oregon, were some of the original inhabitants of the town, arriving in 1851. The collection primarily contains personal correspondence within the Hedden family dating from 1885-1959 and also documents and business correspondence dating from 1880 to 1969.

The Hedden store was a general merchandise store that operated from 1852-1976 in Scottsburg, Oregon. The collection contains store and postal ledgers detailing accounts of purchases (both general and postal) and also provides information on customers.

Joseph Hedges (1827-1895) was a carpenter and pioneer who travelled from Ohio to Oregon in 1852. The collection consists of a single, one paragraph letter from Hedge to Fouts.

Ansel Hemenway (1841 - ) farmed near Crow, Oregon. The collection contains a diary that consists of seven volumes, and is mostly an accounting of farm work.

Humphrey (1896-1971) was an editor at the Oregon Journal and Oregon City Enterprise newspapers. Collection includes 2 containers of correspondence: outgoing and incoming, manuscripts, photographs, biographical information and other miscellaneous materials.

George Humphrey was a resident of Springfield, Oregon who held interests in sheep, the Oregon Iron Works, the Oregon Central Military Wagon Road, and the Springfield Manufacturing company. The collection (1866-1867) consists of two personal account books that includes information regarding household goods, cash on hand, investments, interest, and expenses.

John Webster Perit Huntington (1831-1869), publisher, lawyer, teacher, farmer and Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Oregon. In 1857 Huntington met and married Mary Applegate (1834-1878), daughter of Charles Applegate. Collections include copies of 9 letters addressed to "Ma" and "Pa." These letters are both written by John and his wife Mary to their parents between 1855 and 1860.

Crawford Isbell (1837-1864) lived in Eugene, Oregon, worked in mines in California, and was murdered on on the road between Canyon City and Eugene. The collection (1864-1865) contains correspondence from Isbell to his siblings, and letters from other's regarding Isbell's murder.

The Adams family includes William Lysander Adams, his son John W. Johnson, (first president of University of Oregon), his son Herbert S. Johnson, and family members Olive Frances Goodell, Helen E. Adams, Inez Adams Parker, and Thomas McBride. The collection (1929) contains a scrapbook created by Herbert S. Johnson of Adams and Goodell family documents, correspondence, and genealogical research.

Melchi Johnson, of Bethel, Polk County, Oregon, wrote a letter dated August 30, 1869, to his daughter. The collection contains the letter in which Johnson reminds his daughter that she has not been forgotten by her family.

Collection comprises a short biography of Caroline Thurman Buffum, pioneer to Oregon and resident of Amity, Oregon, written by Laura Judy.

Clinton Kelly (1808-1875) was a Methodist preacher who came to Oregon from Kentucky in 1847. The Kelly Family papers include ten letters and eleven documents.

Typescripts for the radio program KOAC Library Hour, prepared under the direction of Martin Schmitt for the University of Oregon Library, 1952. Includes related correspondence (1951-1952), program schedules, and short critiques of the programs Stage Coach to Roseburg and The People L'arn done by high school students. Principal correspondents include Karl Hintz of the University of Oregon Library and William S. Forth of Oregon State College.

Anne Applegate was the great niece of Jessie Applegate and the grandaughter of Charles Applegate who are known for establishing the Applegate Trail in Oregon. Collection contains one, typed manuscript of her history of the Applegates in Oregon, particularly the Charles Applegate family of Yoncalla. Written between 1955 and 1960 from letters, diaries, and recollections.

Lot Livermore (1835- ) was a Republican who was elected county treasurer of Umatilla County and was elected as the first mayor of Pendleton.

His collection consists of correspondence ranging in date from January 1861 to March 1905. The letters concern his life in Oregon, finances, and events.

Charles T. McDaniel was, for many years, a cashier of the Stockgrowers & Farmers National Bank of Wallowa, Oregon. The collection contains bank correspondence, personal and family correspondence, a travel diary, memorial letters, and a photograph album.

Walter E. Meacham (1879-1951) was a historian and Oregon Trail enthusiast. The Walter Meacham papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts, research notes, and a variety of materials associated with the Old Oregon Trail Association and Meacham's promotional activities.

Phil Metschan, Sr. (1840-1920) was born in Hesse-Cassel, Germany and travelled to the United States and settled in Canyon City, Oregon where he ran a store, became Oregon state treasurer, and established a hotel in Portland, Oregon. The collection contains correspondence, diaries, financial and legal records, pioneer family files, photographs and memorabilia.

Fay Hampton Robertson compiled histories of the Moore, Hampton, and Dillard branches of her family. The collection consists of typewritten copies of those histories as well as the trail diary of Jonathan Limerick Moore (1830-1862).

Nathaniel Myer's diary recounts his travels from Van Buren, Iowa to the Rogue River Valley of Oregon. His diary includes descriptions of the weather and landscapes along with events.

James Neall (1820-1903) was a pioneer, merchant, and entrepreneur from Philadelphia who established claims and businesses in Oregon and California. His wife, Hannah Lloyd Neall (1817-1912) was a cultural enthusiast and suffragist who wrote for numerous early California publications. The collection consists of reminiscences, correspondence, miscellaneous papers, bound volumes and a painted tin box.

James Willis Nesmith was a US Senator and a US Representative for Oregon between 1861-1875. Collection contains correspondence between Nesmith and Georgia Nesmith.
