Abstract

Fred Michael Fuecker (1895-1975) served in the military from 1911-1955, including World War I and World War II. The collection consists of a World War I diary, administrative papers of the provost marshal of Los Angeles and Arizona, and of Service Command Unit 4910, Los Angeles (1942-1944), and seven photograph albums, (1911-1924), scrapbooks and mementos.

John Arthur Gamber was an Oregonian who participated in the Spanish American War. The collection comprises correspondence with Mary McAlister, whom Gamber later married in 1904, as well as diaries, photographs, and mementoes relating to the Philippines Campaign during the Spanish American War.

John Gates (1827-1888) was a construction engineer for the Oregon Steam Navigation Co. and the Oregon Railway and Navigation Co. From 1885 to 1888, he served as mayor of Portland, Oregon. The collection consists of correspondence, financial records, legal documents, diaries, scrapbook pages, steamboat plans and inventions, and photographs.

Wyona Eliza Surfus Gordon was an Oregon pioneer and school teacher. The collection consists of a detailed typewritten memoir of an overland wagon trip from Kansas to Oregon in 1883.

Abstract Joseph Gragg came overland to Oregon from Illinois in 1852 when he was 25 years old. He settled on a farm near Monroe and married Levina Buckingham, who came to Oregon with her family in 1846 via the southern route, led by Jesse Applegate. The Gragggs had eight children, three of whom died in childhood; the five surviving children were Thomas Heman, Betsey M.., James Phile, David Vernon, and Marcus Edward. Loyal M. Graham (1860-1961) was an attorney and legislator, and in 1919 as an Oregon state legislator he introduced the nation's first gasoline tax. The collection contains political correspondence, legal briefs, diaries and journals, scrapbook pages and speeches.

James Watson Hamilton was a circuit judge at Roseburg, and a member of the Board of Regents at the University of Oregon. His diary details his work as a clerk in the law office of S.H. Hazard of Empire City,and his later partnership with Hazard. Folder also contains a bill from the Alcona Lodge for the year 1890.

W. Harry Hembree was a ship captain and master ship builder in Oregon. His family, and the Kellogg family, owned and built ships and created a freight transportation company in the Willamette Valley. The W. Harry Hembree Papers consist of the retelling of Hembree's grandfather's 1843 overland journey, a 1947 interview in which Hembree reminisces about his family and his life, and Hembree's 1912 log of the Althea voyage from Portland, Oregon to Alaska.
