Abstract

Charles F. Bulfinch lived in Weston, Oregon. By age 17 he had joined the army. The Charles F. Bulfinch Papers consist of a dairy of his 1898 trip to Alaska and the Klondike region. The trip began in March and he returned home to Weston in October of the same year. The diary contains daily entries, sketches, food recipes, and one photograph of Bulfinch at age 17.

Augustus Ripley Burbank was a businessman in the West and Midwest. The Augustus Ripley Burbank diaries consist of three volumes of diaries. The diaries discuss overland travel to California, the growth of Portland and Lafayette, Oregon, personal issues and the growth and development of railroads in the Willamette Valley. The frequency of the diary entries varies from nonexistent for many years to almost daily.

Abstract Edward Chambreau (1821-1902), adventurer and gambler, was born in France, migrated to Canada with his family in 1825, and in 1846 enlisted with the U.S. Army at St. Louis. From 1853 through 1875 Chambreau moved between Portland, Tygh Valley and Vancouver, running saloons, gambling parlors, general stores and a restaurant. William Cornell was a pioneer from Alexandria, Ohio. This collection consist of a copy of his diary that describes his crossing of the plains in 1852 to Oregon.

Medorem Crawford helped lead emigrants overland to the Pacific Northwest in the early 1860s. From 1864 to 1869 he was Oregon collector of internal revenue, and from 1871 to 1875 he served as appraiser of customs. The collection is comprised of diaries, correspondence and account books. Some of the diaries describe overland journeys. The major part of the collection are the diaries for 1859-1861, 1863, 1864, 1869-1871, 1876-1877, 1885-1886.

Joseph LeRoy Dodds (1891 - 1973) worked in India as a Presbyterian missionary in 1917, and in 1932, Dodds was appointed secretary of the India Council of the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions, and four years later he became secretary of the Board itself. Benjamin Franklin Dowell, a native of Virginia, came west on the overland trail in 1850. He practiced law in Jacksonville, Oregon and in Washington, D.C. Dowell, with the assistance of his wife and others, owned the Oregon Sentinel newspaper in Jacksonville. The Benjamin Franklin Dowell Papers includes memorandum books, diaries, scrapbooks, and correspondence between Dowell and his wife from Jacksonville and Washington, D.C.

Abstract George Allan Dyson was born in England in 1843 and his family moved to the United States soon after. In 1861 Dyson sailed to California to work in the gold mines. A few years later he moved to Brownsville, Oregon and established the town’s first newspaper, the Brownsville Advertiser, in 1878.
