William C. Gleim was an enlisted man from Chicago during the Philippine-American War (Philippine War of Independence), probably in the 1st Illinois Battalion. The collection (1899) contains correspondence written from Gleim to his parents from the transport ship Sherman en route to the Philippines, and from Luzon.

Abstract The Union Veterans of the Civil War formed the Grand Army of the Republic. In Oregon there were several GAR posts; the Meade Corps #18 of the Women’s Relief Corps was associated with Oregon City post #2. After the turn of the 20th Century, the GAR served largely as an organization for the promotion of patriotism and the commemoration of Memorial Day. The letters, with few exceptions, are to and from family members. During the war Hampton was at Presidio, Calif., and in Manila, P.I.
