William C. Gleim was an enlisted man from Chicago during the Philippine-American War (Philippine War of Independence), probably in the 1st Illinois Battalion. The collection (1899) contains correspondence written from Gleim to his parents from the transport ship Sherman en route to the Philippines, and from Luzon.

Abstract The Union Veterans of the Civil War formed the Grand Army of the Republic. In Oregon there were several GAR posts; the Meade Corps #18 of the Women’s Relief Corps was associated with Oregon City post #2. After the turn of the 20th Century, the GAR served largely as an organization for the promotion of patriotism and the commemoration of Memorial Day. William H. Hammond (1908-2001) served in the military during World War II and in state agencies in Oregon for much of his career. He was active in fraternal organizations including the Kiwanis. The collection consists of documentation of Hammond's career and colleagues.

Edwin William Hampton, from Portland, Oregon, a private in Company H, Oregon Volunteer Infantry, is said to have been the first Oregon soldier killed in the Spanish-American War's Philippines campaign. The letters, with few exceptions, are to and from family members. During the war Hampton was at Presidio, Calif., and in Manila, P.I.

W. H. Hardy was a member of the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Naval expedition to Japan in 1852-1854, Commanded by Mathew C. Perry, that resulted in opening up trade routes with Japan. The collection contains a letter dated November 18, 1918 from Hardy to Fred Lockley, and a poem commemorating Perry.

The collection (1898-1918) contains correspondence written while Kyne served in the Philippines, during his discharge between wars, and a later letter written in France during WWI.

The collection includes correspondence, diaries, articles on political and engineering subjects, photographs, and the Linder family’s records, all of which reflect Linder’s humanitarian work, his political activism, and the impact his death had on American foreign policy debates and within the general public sphere.

Fred Lockley (1871-1958) was a columnist, and also manager of newspapers in the Pacific Northwest, a rare book dealer, and an author of books on Oregon and Pacific Northwest history. The collection contains a letter dated June 20, 1916, from Lockley to Charles S. Jackson, in which Lockely offered to report about an Oregon military unit going to Mexico.
