Abstract The Cayuse War (1847-1855), the Rogue River War (ca. 1855-1857) and the Yakima War (1856-1858) all resulted in losses for the Oregon and Washington Indians. Many tribal members succumbed to either military attack or disease, and most of the remaining population were sent to live on reservations. Additionally, a great deal of tribal land was taken by the U.S. government in the aftermath of these wars. Samuel Colver (1815-1891) came to Oregon in 1850, where he served as an Indian Agent and U.S. Marshall, and helped found the community of Phoenix, Oregon. The Colver Family Papers contain correspondence among family members, and some letters to Oliver C. Applegate, 1869-1870. The papers include historical and genealogical notes, and reminiscences of O.A. Stearns, including information on Samuel Colver.

Jack L. Crain of Tillamook, Oregon served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. This collection of letters, sent home to his parents in Oregon, documents his time spent in-service between 1943 and 1945, and focuses primarily on the every day experiences of serving overseas during war time.

Collection includes correspondence (1894-1954): personal and formal, college class notes from Yale University (1898), addresses, legal documents, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, published materials, maps, photographs, his diary which documents his experiences during WWI, and other miscellaneous materials.

William S. Crust of Ft. Laramie, Indian Territory wrote a letter dated dated June 2, 1868, to Mr. and Mrs. Curtis, regarding their son, Alfred. The collection contains the letter in which Crust informed the parents that their son was "killed by Indians" on May 29th, while camped by Elk Horn Creek.

The Department of Military Science was established at the University of Oregon in 1919, although the school had sponsored military training through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program before the creation of a Military Science department.
