Children and Youth

The Oregon Governor's State Committee on Children and Youth began in 1959, and were concerned with the safety, care, education, employment opportunities for Oregon children and youth. The collection (1960-1963) contains committee minutes, rule and procedural documents, conference and workshop reports, Youth Employment Kit pamphlets, and other reports and printed material.

Collection comprises illustrations by artists Maud and Miska Petersham for children's books, including The American ABC, Off to Bed and When I Grow Up, as well as related galley proofs and mock-ups.

Ruth Gipson Plowhead (1877-1970) is known for authoring books for children and young people. The collection consists of manuscripts, books and short stories, minor correspondence, and original illustrations by Agnes Randall Moore

Christine Hilda Price (1928-1980) is known for her work as an illustrator and writer of children's books on art history, dance, and folklore. The collection includes illustrations and sketches, correspondence, published books, travel notes, and research materials.

Edith Ballinger Price (1897-1997) was a noted author and illustrator of children's books. She was a frequent contributor to St. Nicholas and a founder of the Girl Scouts' Brownie program. The collection includes a range of materials related to her publications and is noted for the series of sketchbooks, 1902-1940s that document her evolution as an artist, and the complete set of illustrations for My Lady Lee.

Margaret Evans Price (1888-1973) was an illustrator, artist, entrepreneur and writer of children's books. The collection includes original illustrations, published works and tear sheets from American Girl magazine.

Franklin M. Reck (1896-1965) was an author of books for young boys. The collection includes correspondence, notebooks, and literary manuscripts for books, articles, short stories, early works, and presentations to the Ford Foundation.

Denise Royal (1935- ) was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania and was educated at the University of Pennsylvania. She did public relations work, and spent time as a free-lance writer. Most of the collection represents the research and writing of a young people's biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer, published by Saint Martin Press, 1969:

Polly King Ruhtenberg (1907-1983) a libertarian and children's book author was active in social and civic organizations throughout her life. The collection includes correspondence, manuscripts, speeches, photographs, and a scrapbook that reflect her work as an author and libertarian.

Millicent Selsam (1912- 1996) was a biologist and teacher who wrote natural science literature for children. This collection primarily contains manuscripts, illustrations, and other materials related to published works as well as various versions of paperbacks and correspondence.

Kate Seredy (1899-1975) won the Newbery Award and Newbery honors for her children's books. Noted as an illustrator for titles such as Caddie Woodlawn, she also illustrated her own works, drawing on her Hungarian childhood for classics including The Good Master and The White Stag. The collection includes illustrations for Caddie Woodlawn and With Harp and Lute, and a representative sampling of her work.

Howard Simon was an artist and illustrator of children's books and Mina Lewiton Simon was an author of juvenile literature. This collection contains manuscripts, manuscript materials, published books, illustrations and miscellaneous items pertaining to the work of Howard and Mina Lewiton Simon.

Louis Slobodkin (1903-1975) was an artist and illustrator and writer of books for children. He won the Caldecott Medal in 1943 for Many Moons. The collection contains artwork, manuscripts, correspondence, publicity, photographs, and memorabilia.

Alice Jacqueline Kennedy Steffan (1907- ) was an author of books for children who published under the pseudonym Jack Steffan. The collection includes correspondence with publishers, manuscripts and other material related to eight books, including The Long Fellow.

Harvé Stein was an artist and illustrator of children's books who worked primarily in watercolors. The collection contains correspondence, 1941-1970, and original illustrations for two books, The First Book of the California Goldrush, by Walter Havinghurst (Franklin Watts, 1962), and Galileo and the Magic Numbers, by Sidney Rosen (Little, Brown, 1958).

Dorothy Sterling (1913-2008 ) is a writer, particularly of fiction and non-fiction books for children and young adults.

Emma Gelders Sterne (1894-1971) was primarily a writer of juvenile literature. The Sterne collection consists of manuscripts and supporting materials for eleven books, two plays, two speeches, and correspondence.

Edward Stratemeyer (1862-1927) was an author and founded the Stratemeyer Syndicate which produced adventure story series for children, such as Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, Honey Bunch, and the Bobbsey Twins. The collection includes literary manuscripts and fan letters.

Collection comprises papers of American artist, illustrator and author Helen Damrosch Tee-Van, and includes illustrations from her books (both rough sketches and final drawings), sketch books, educational dioramas, murals, backgrounds for exhibits, manuscripts, articles, underwater illustrations from oceanographic expeditions, photographs, letters, and habitat maps.

Collection comprises a manuscript, art work and books associated with American writer Annette Turngren. Included is a draft manuscript of Mystery plays a golden flute. There are illustrations by Dorothy Bayley for The copper kettle, and for Flaxen braids. And there are a number of Turngren's published books, including The copper kettle; Choosing the right college; and Mystery of the water witch.

Collection comprises correspondence, sketchbooks, literary manuscripts, illustrations and other material by children's book author and illustrator Nora S. Unwin (1907-1982). Correspondence is primarily incoming letters. Illustrations include ink and watercolor illustrations for children's books by Unwin and others, notably Elizabeth Yates. Collection also includes several sound recordings and photographs of Unwin.

Collection comprises literary manuscripts of young adult fiction by Amelia Elizabeth Walden and her correspondence with McGraw-Hill relating to book production.

Lisl Weil is a Viennese-born author-illustrator of children's books. The collection includes correspondence, manuscripts, and Weil's illustrations for books by other authors.

Vivian Lescher Werner (1921- ) was a free-lance writer for magazines, a novelist, and a writer of books for children and young people. The collection consists of manuscripts in various stages, source material, and correspondence.

Collection comprises correspondence, literary manuscripts, and foreign language translations by author, editor, and translator Anne Terry White (1896-1980).

Eloise Wilkin (1904-1987) was a writer and illustrator of children's book. The collection contains documents relating to the book illustrated by Wilkin, The Visit, and includes correspondence, illustrations, a draft of the manuscript, photographs, a layout of the book, a press release, original artwork, and a bound copy of the book.

Hazel Wilson (April 8, 1898-August 20, 1992) worked in many positions at libraries around the country as well as a position overseas. She also held other positions relating to students. The material in this collection reflects her career as an author.

Catherine Woolley (August 11, 1904-July 23, 2005) was an advertising copywriter and later a freelance children’s author. The collection includes manuscripts and correspondence that reflect Woolley’s career in writing.

Lee and Robert Wyndham were authors of children’s books as well as holding many other positions pertaining to writing. Their collection includes correspondence, miscellaneous materials, published works and many manuscripts that represent the careers of the Wyndhams.
