She served in Tientsin, Shanghai, and Foochow at multiple colleges and also worked as an editor. A strong advocate of Indian rights, and a believer in higher education for native peoples, Marsden founded a Presbyterian Church in the Tlingit tribe in Ketchikan, Alaska.
