Biographical / Historical

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is a federal agency that provides public engineering services. USACE oversaw the initial planning and construction of roads and bridges in Crater Lake National Park between 1913 to 1919, after the first appropriation of funds by Congress in June 1910. The project focused on the construction of a circuit road around the lake, the first Rim Road, and was supervised by Assistant Engineer George E. Goodwin. Starting in 1920, USACE departed and road management was transferred to the National Park Service.
