Viola Literary Association recording secretary's book
Content Description
Viola Literary Association recording secretary's recording book documents the subjects discussed by the literary society founded in Viola, Oregon. The recording book includes the 1890 minutes of the society, member roster, dues, and the constitution of the society. The ledger records debated issues such as "resolved that women should enjoy equal suffrage with men," and "resolved that the negro has been worse treated in America than the Indian." The final pages of the ledger are unrelated to the society and detail the goings-on of the local schoolhouse in 1896.
One photograph is included with the leger, possibly a 1981 portrait of the society in front to the school house in Springwater, Oregon, a town nine miles south of Viola.
