Identifier: Coll 802

Content Description

This collection contains one manuscript diary, about 132 pages, with entries by W. I. Fleck documenting assaying and mining activities throughout Oregon, Idaho, and Colorado. The majority of the entries relate to Gold Hill, Oregon, and Fleck's work on assaying ore, surveying claims, and working on machinery. Fleck also periodically notes the weather, mentions other miners and assayers working in the area, and includes some details about his trips to survey river routes and potential mining sites. The diary also contains one photograph of the Golden Drift Mining Company on the Rogue River and four snapshots, two of two young women, one of a young man, and one of a small child. Flack created a short, general index at the back of the diary noting mining locations and assay work.
