Scope and Contents
The I.E. Howard papers contain subject files, correspondence, periodicals, newsletters, pamphlets, booklets, press releases, and manuscripts collected by Irving E. Howard, a conservative Congregational minister, professor of finance, author, and Associate Editor of Christian Economics. The papers document the Christian Church’s stance on social issues, such as race, labor unions, economics, and politics in the United States from 1940 to 1974. The papers also document disagreements between and within Christian denominations regarding these issues. A significant portion of the material is related to a proposed merger of the General Council of the Congregational Christian Churches with the Evangelical and Reformed Church to form the United Church of Christ.
