Biographical / Historical
The University of Oregon women’s gymnastics team competed in several associations and conferences. The team began competition in the NWCWEA (Northwest College Women’s Extramural Association), which was renamed the NCWSA (Northwest College Women's Sports Association) in 1970. The NCWSA joined the AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) in 1975, and the University of Oregon became a member of Region 9. Beginning in 1982, the team competed in the Northern Pacific Conference after the dissolution of the AIAW. At the university, the team competed in Gerlinger Annex and McArthur Court. Head coaches included Marilyn Fitch (1970-1974), Henriette Heiny (1975-1981), Gary Vanderhoef (1981-1982), and Edwin Boyd (1982-1986). The team was a member of the Women’s Recreation Association (WRA) until the 1973 creation of the Women’s Intercollegiate Athletics (WIA) department. In 1977, the WIA merged with the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The team was eliminated due to budget cuts in the spring of 1986.
