Scope and Contents
This collection consists of writings by George Stewart and biographical material. Writings include manuscripts, articles, sermons, prayers, and published works. Biographical material includes general correspondence, speeches and radio talks, material relating to Stewart’s overseas lecture tours (1940-1952), material relating to Stewart’s works with the American Society of the French Legion of Honor, and photographs.

Biographical / Historical
George Stewart (1892-1972) was an author, minister, soldier, and statesman. He attended Linfield College in McMinnville Oregon and received his Ph.D. in 1921 from Yale University. Throughout his life, he was the recipient of several professional and academic awards.
Stewart served in World War I in a military capacity, working his way up to Battalion Commander. In World War II, he traveled extensively for the United States military while lecturing, observing, and writing on several overseas tours. Between the wars, Stewart served with many relief organizations and wrote several books, including the authoritative The White Armies of Russia.
Dr. Stewart was Associate Minister of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York, the pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, Connecticut, and actively involved with various church affiliated relief programs. He worked with the Student Division of the National Council of the YMCA and the World Council of Churches.
Stewart authored over 20 books and a number of articles relating to history and religious subjects. Much of his career centered on the lecture tours he made for the United States. Topics covered at international conferences and selected speaking engagements included American history, institutions, and ideals.
