OFN Eastern Oregon Folklife and Traditional Arts Survey records
Scope and Contents
The Oregon Folklife Network conducted a survey of folklife and traditional arts in five Oregon counties in the eastern Oregon in 2016 and 2017. The Eastern Oregon Folklife and Traditional Arts Survey is one of the several surveys the organization has completed since 2012. This collection contains folklore fieldwork documentation, newsletter articles, and public presentations created in this survey. Fieldwork documentation is in digital file formats and includes 2036 color photographs and 87 interview sound recordings, as well as media logs and artist data sheets, documenting 54 traditional artists, events, and organizations.
Professional folklorists Douglas Manger and Joseph O’Connell completed fieldwork in Baker County, Crook County, Deschutes County, Grant County, Union County, Wallowa County, and Wheeler County. Oregon Folklife Network Director Riki Saltzman and folklore student Brad McMullen participated in selected interviews and contributed fieldwork documentation.
The survey documented the following traditional arts (and artists) associated with regional occupations and avocations related to ranching: ranching (Joe and Roger Pechanec, Ernestine and Roy Critchlow, Pat Dougherty, Janie Tippett); horse training (Kitty Lauman) and horse riding skills (Leroy Twiggs, John Cox, Alice Trindle, Tonya Rosebrook); saddlemaking (Bill Huston, Wink Burgess, Bub Warren) and rawhide braiding (Terri Berthelsen); auctioneering (Ramona Hulick); Western hat shaping (Gene Baldwin), stockdog training (Tom Blasdell); Silversmithing and metalwork (Larry Bacon, Steve Parks, Tim Parks); shoe and bootmaking (DW Frommer); and cowboy poetry and storytelling (Peggy Brennan and Bill Henke, Gaynor Dawson, Dan Cannon, Lonnie Shurtleff).
The survey also documented hunting, fishing, and wildcrafting (Jeff Perin, Dave and Mary Ann Dozer, Cindy Kipcinski and Janis Smith, James Nash and Paul Pagano, Bryan Karolski, James Akenson, Roger Fairfield), as well as woodworking and musical instrument making (Don Rowe, Ed Beacham, Preston Thompson, Steve Campbell, Dave Traylor).
Photographs include portraits of artists, as well as images of arts and crafts, tools and supplies, process and techniques, and workshops and workrooms. Artist data sheets completed by folklorists include artist biographical data and contact information, as well as a description of each artist's tradition and how it was learned.
