Scope and Contents
This artificial collection consists of photographs by Western photographers in the United States. Subjects include Events (floods, fires, large group gatherings, parades, and the Alaskan Gold Rush), Geographic areas (Oregon, Washington, California, and Alaska, with emphasis on cities and natural scenery in Oregon), Industries and transportation (logging, mining, fishing, shipping, construction, trains, automobiles, boats, and horses), Land and cityscapes (houses, hotels, storefronts, farms, and volcanoes), and People (portraits and group photos of Native Americans, pioneers, politicians, entertainers, workers, individuals, and families).

Collection is open to the public. Collection must be used in Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room. Collection or parts of collection may be stored offsite. Please contact Special Collections and University Archives in advance of your visit to allow for transportation time.

Property rights reside with Special Collections and University Archives, University of Oregon Libraries. Copyright resides with the creators of the documents or their heirs. All requests for permission to publish collection materials must be submitted to Special Collections and University Archives. The reader must also obtain permission of the copyright holder.

Subjects include Events (floods, fires, large group gatherings, parades, and the Alaskan Gold Rush), Geographic areas (Oregon, Washington, California, and Alaska, with emphasis on cities and natural scenery in Oregon), Industries and transportation (logging, mining, fishing, shipping, construction, trains, automobiles, boats, and horses), Land and cityscapes (houses, hotels, storefronts, farms, and volcanoes), and People (portraits and group photos of Native Americans, pioneers, politicians, entertainers, workers, individuals, and families).
Arrangement
This collection is arranged in five series: 1. Events (circa 1880s-1932), 2. Geographic areas (circa 1860s-1966), 3. Industries and transportation (circa 1850s-1954), 4. Land and cityscapes (circa 1841-1940), and 5. People (circa 1840s-1968). Material within each series is arranged alphabetically by creator.
