Scope and Contents

The collection contains original scores and published music of musical comedies, short operas, symphonic works, chamber music, and other songs, scrapbooks, and music recordings.

The collection contains forty five original scores. Most of the songs and orchestral pieces in the collection were written prior to 1938. A quintet for clarinet, piano, and strings, a cantata, and an overture were written later, in the United States.

The collection contains material in English and German.

The collection is arranged in four series:

Series I contains original compositions in manuscript form, alphabetized by title. Entries often contain notes, rehearsal marks, and other corrections.

Series II contains five scores of published music, organized by title of work.

Series III contains five volumes of scrapbooks (and also loose papers) that include programs, reviews, poems, letters, posters and a script.

Series IV contains recordings of two works, "Little Suite for Orchestra," and a quintet for clarinet, piano, and strings.

Conditions Governing Access

Collection is open to the public. Collection must be used in Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room. Collection or parts of collection may be stored offsite. Please contact Special Collections and University Archives in advance of your visit to allow for transportation time. Collection includes sound recordings, moving images, and digital files to which access is restricted. Access to these materials is governed by repository policy and may require the production of listening or viewing copies. Researchers requiring access must notify Special Collections and University Archives in advance and pay fees for reproduction services as necessary.

Property rights reside with Special Collections and University Archives, University of Oregon Libraries. Copyright resides with the creators of the documents or their heirs. All requests for permission to publish collection materials must be submitted to Special Collections and University Archives. The reader must also obtain permission of the copyright holder.

Biographical / Historical

Hans Ewald Heller (1894-1966) was a composer, pianist, writer, and music critic. He was born in Vienna and educated at the University of Vienna. He was a music critic for the journals Wiener Zeitung and Neues Wiener. He fled Vienna in 1938 and came to the United States, where he taught, edited, created film music and was music director for "Hearst Metrotone News," a newsreel series.
