Scope and Contents

The George H. Waterman Papers is a relatively small collection of Waterman’s personal and professional documents. The collection is divided into two categories, or series. The first being personal papers, correspondence, and tax records and the second one being corporate documents. Waterman was the president of Manufacturers Mineral Company, later known as Mineral Products Corporation. The first series, located in box one, contains the personal documents and letters of Waterman, both incoming and outgoing. Many of the letters are business related in some way, very few of them are totally personal. In this series, The Waterman Papers is very strong in information relating to the various organizations that Waterman and his company belonged to. There are extensive files concerning the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers as well as membership in the Association of Washington Industries and the Northwest Mining Association. If one was researching the life of George Waterman, this collection and series would not be very useful. There are letters to and concerning family members, but they are focused around a business purpose. Besides containing personal, business related correspondence, the George Waterman Papers contain both personal and business tax records. These records span 1938-1956 not inclusive for all years. These records contain the actual tax documents as well as personal receipts. The second series, located in box two, is the corporate records of Waterman’s company, Manufacturers Mineral Company. This series contains bound volumes of the following information: Payroll registers, ledger for 1939 and invoice registers for 1939-1941. Please note that some of the papers in this series are very loosely categorized, as they are not clearly divided into folders. Series II also has extensive contracts and documentation pertaining to the mining claims of Manufacturers Mineral Company. These claims are in Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Montana. There are also a lot of contracts (mining, lease, claims, and various company contracts) present in this collection. Besides containing business correspondence, the second series also contains actual business records, which include numbers for the productivity of the various mines owned and operated by the company. The best strength in this area are the Summaries for 1956. The entire folder contains numbers and comparisons for output and profit. There are also folders concerning the individual plant or mining sites. The George H. Waterman Papers are primarily focused on his business ventures. They contain little information about his personal life. However., they do contain a large amount of information about what Waterman participated in, but in relation to his business and career.
