Scope and Contents

The collection contains scrapbooks of correspondence, clippings, photographs and other material from Wagner's time as superintendent in New Mexico schools and as chief of the Alaska Division, U. S. Department of Education, 1917-1933.

Scrapbooks include correspondence, broadsheets, clippings, and mementos of Wagner's career. A photograph album contains snapshots of scenes in and near Metlahkatla, Alaska, 1926-1927.

Biographical / Historical

Jonathan Wagner (1873- ?) was born in Columbia City, Indiana and educated at Manchester College and Indiana State Normal School. He was admitted to the Indiana Bar in 1902.

Between 1917 and 1921 he was superintendent of schools at Las Cruces and Santa Fe, New Mexico and was elected New Mexico superintendent of public instruction. From 1922-1923 he was president of New Mexico Normal School, and from 1923 to 1930 he served as chief of the Alaska Division of the U. S. Department of Education.

Abstract

Jonathan Wagner (1873- ?) became superintendent of schools at Las Cruces and Santa Fe, New Mexico, was then elected New Mexico superintendent of public instruction, then elected president of New Mexico Normal University, and from 1923 to 1930, served as chief of the Alaska Division of the U. S. Department of Education. The collection contains scrapbooks of correspondence, clippings, photographs and other material from Wagner's career in education, 1917-1933.
