Scope and Contents

The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, association records, personal business records, and personal records.

Correspondence is divided into incoming (1,074 letters, 1918-1966) and outgoing (671 letters, 1918-1964). Both sections are arranged chronologically. Major correspondents include J. I. Case Threshing Machine Company, Oregon Farm Bureau Federation, and Pacific Wool Growers, among others. The correspondence relates to the problems of wheat, cattle, and sheep ranching, and Staggs' relations with state and Federal committees and agencies related to agricultural affairs, such as the Agricultural Research Foundation, Farm Credit Administration, and U. S. Department of the Interior.

Manuscripts include speeches and editorials written by Staggs as well as carbons of manuscripts by others.

Association records are arranged alphabetically by organization name. Records include minutes, reports, and information sheets. The organizations are: Agricultural Research Foundation, American Society of Range Management, Baker County Chamber of Commerce, Basche-Duncan Ditch Company, Oregon State Public Welfare Commission, U. S. Department of Agriculture, and Water Users of Lower Powder.

Personal business records include ledgers, financial statements (including taxes), and legal documents.

Personal records consist of Staggs's diaries (1946-1947, 1950-1955, and 1957-1966) and travel journals. A travel journal from 1949 describes Staggs's trip to Miami, Florida, and Cuba. There is also a folder of memorabilia.
