Biographical / Historical

James Tertius Jardine was born in Cherry Creek, Idaho, and educated at Utah Agricultural College. He was director of Oregon agricultural experiment stations, 1920-1931, and chief of the Office of Experiment Stations, U.S.D.A., 1931-1946.

Jardine played an important role in grazing research. From 1907 to 1910 Jardine was a special agent of the USDA Forest Service developing techniques for range reconnaissance, and in 1919 published the classic "Range Management in the National Forests."

His major studies were in the Wallowa National Forest where he developed standards of deferred grazing and rotation which became standard for the region.

James Tertius Jardine worked as a civil servant in agriculture; he was director of Oregon agricultural experiment stations, and chief of the Office of Experiment Stations, U.S.D.A. He played an important role in grazing research. The collection (1910-1951) contains contracts and appointment notices, reports on grazing policies, correspondence, and personal information and papers.
