Scope and Contents

Vernon Boyd was a Marine Corps officer, specialist in Arctic logistics. His papers include personal log books for "Operation Nanook," in the Canadian Arctic, summer of 1946; Marine Detachment Task Force 39, Devon Island, N.W.T., 1947; Devon Island Expedition, Arctic Institute of North America, 1960 and 1962, slides present from these expeditions; Marine Detachment Task Force 39, operations from aboard the Burton Island in the Antarctic, 1947-1948. There are also manuscripts of technical papers by Boyd, published technical papers, and minor correspondence, including letters from Paul Siple, with covers, from Pole Station, Antartica, 1957.

Biographical / Historical

Major Vernon Boyd was a Marine Corps officer, specialist in Arctic logistics. He was born in 1908 and died in 1965, spent much of his life consulting with other arctic explorers or journeying the arctic, especially in Byrd's arctic explorations in 1920, and was well known by many. There is a glacier named after him (Boyd's Glacier).
