Scope and Contents
The collection contains play, novel, novelette, short-story, and poetry manuscript material, correspondence, published stories and poems, a scrapbook, mementos, and personal materials.
There are four manuscript series: Play Manuscripts, Novel and Novelette Manuscripts, Short Stories, and Articles. Material within each series is organized alphabetically by title of work. Types of material include outlines, drafts, revisions, critical notes, and study notes. When applicable, the the paper finding aid includes the pseudonym under which the work was written is noted.
Poetry manuscript material includes a booklet of poems (1903) written under the name "Ida Elliot," another booklet of poems written between 1906-1924, and a folder containing manuscript poems organized in alphabetical order by title.
Miscellaneous manuscripts consists of four folders of mainly unidentified handwritten and typed manuscripts. Material includes outlines, revisions, worksheets, and story and play fragments.
Published material includes articles and tearsheets of published short stories and poems. The paper finding aid includes the publication name and date information.
There is also a scrapbook containing the long short story The Beret From Paris (1932), tearsheets of published poems and articles, announcements of the production of Allen's plays, critical comments and other mementos.
There is one folder of correspondence (1935-1943) mainly from literary agents.
Also available is a manuscript concerning reminisces and philosophical discussions on life, children, marriage, and the soul.
Miscellaneous material consists of mostly personal material including memorial and obituary clippings regarding Allen, theatre play-bills, a notebook on published material, a diary, and poems written to Allen. This section also includes clippings regarding the career of Eric Allen, two poems of his, and his passport.

Collection is open to the public. Collection must be used in Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room. Collection or parts of collection may be stored offsite. Please contact Special Collections and University Archives in advance of your visit to allow for transportation time.

Biographical / Historical
Sally Elliot Allen (1880-1943) was a Pacific Northwest writer and playwright. She was born in Methuen, Massachusetts, educated at the University of Wisconsin, and married Eric Allen in 1906. The Allens lived in Seattle, Washington until 1912, when they moved to Oregon because Eric Allen was appointed Dean of the School of Journalism at the University of Oregon.
