Scope and Contents

The collection includes approximately 8,360 2" x 2" color slides of Oregon, the American West, and the Oregon Rajneesh compound. Series I and II depict landscapes and are arranged by geographic region. Slides are annotated with location information. Series III includes slides of the Atlas of Oregon publication and geographical projects arranged by topic, including State Streets and Neighborhoods. Series IV includes slides of the Oregon Rajneesh compound, including aerial photography of the community. The collection also includes folders of notes and clippings related to the Rajneesh compound and Townsend's visits.

Biographical / Historical

Tim Townsend was a high school geography instructor who taught for the Eugene 4J district for 40 years. He also taught summer session in the University of Oregon geography department during the 1970s-1980s. His courses included: teacher training and methods, geography of Oregon and the American West. Townsend was a pilot, and he documented the changing landscape of Oregon and the American West from the ground and air, using his photography as a teaching aid in the classroom. Townsend was also allowed rare access to aerially photograph the Rajneeshpuram intentional community in Wasco County, Oregon in the 1980s.
