Scope and Contents
This collection is comprised of two letters from Senator Wayne Morse to Mel Byers in response to letters to the editor written by Mr. Byers. It also includes a program from the 14th Annual Banquet for the Washington County Democratic Central Committee and an oversize Oregonian clipping about Mr. Byers' many letters to the editor.

Biographical / Historical
Melvin "Mel" Byers was born in California in 1920 to Henry and Lena Byers. By 1930, the family had moved to Portland, Oregon where Mel's father worked in road construction. Mel served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and worked as a cement mason after the war. Early in the 1970s, he ran for a spot in the Oregon legislature, but lost.
