Biographical / Historical

Helen Huntington was born in The Dalles, Oregon on September 24, 1896 to James Marsh Huntington and Mary Bell Huntington, nee Mills. She was the youngest of 6 children, James, Hazel, Walter, Charles and Hollis. She graduated from the The Dalles High School, then known as The Dalles Wahtonka High School. Helen's father worked in The Dalles as a real estate and insurance agent, but died when she was in her early teens.

Helen, like her brothers Hollis and Charles, attended the University of Oregon, where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Hollis and Charles, or "Shy" as he was ubiquitously called, were Oregon football stars, playing at fullback and quarterback respectively. Shy went on to teach Physical Education, and coach the football, basketball, and baseball teams.

On April 8, 1922, Helen married Ernest Anderson Kuck a business man who also had roots in The Dalles; two years later the couple had a son, James Henry. Sadly, James passed away at the tender age of 15. Helen passed away on December 23, 1945 in The Dalles, and is buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery there.
