Scope and Contents
The collection consists of a typed copy of "Across the Plains", which is a transcription of Handsaker's journal from August 25 to September 17, 1853, that is billed as a missing chapter of the book Pioneer Life.
This missing chapter was given to the University of Oregon library in 1937 by Handsaker's daughter, Luella Bristow, to supplement the library's copy of Pioneer Life.

Biographical / Historical
Samuel "Uncle Sam" Handsaker was an Oregon pioneer and veteran of the Rogue River Indian Wars.
Handsaker came to Oregon in 1853, and joined the Oregon Mounted Volunteers shortly thereafter. Pioneer Life, a collection of Handsakers writings for various local papers detailing his experiences as a pioneer and soldier, was published in 1908.
