Biographical / Historical
Robert D. Clark (1910-2005) began his career at the University of Oregon as a professor of speech in 1943 and held that role until 1964. In 1946, Clark began to involve himself in university administration at UO, accepting an appointment as Assistant Dean of the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) in 1947, which he retained until being selected as Dean of CLA in 1955. In 1961, Clark was named Dean of Faculties at UO, and three years later, he accepted the Presidency of San Jose State College (1964-1969), a period characterized by student unrest, racial tensions, and a faculty strike in late 1968.
In 1969, he returned to the University of Oregon as its eleventh president, a position he held until his retirement in 1975. Clark was a popular president at both institutions, and was known for his dedication to the rights of students and curricular innovation.

Arrangement
Materials within this collection are arranged first by initial accession(s) that were processed together as a whole and then by subsequent accession(s). The first section of the collection is processed into series:
Series I: 1969-1970
Series II: 1970-1971
Series III: 1971-1972
Series IV: 1972-1973
Series V: 1973-1974
Series VI: 1974-1975
Series VII: 1975-1976
The second section of the collection is organized by subsequent accessions.
This organization reflects the fact that the collection had been processed at one point in time and then more materials were acquired in increments over time. This organization is also based on the decision not to merge the various accessions and organize them into a whole at this point in time, given the fact that future accruals are anticipated and/or that this organization is deemed sufficient for access.
Researchers should note that materials within a series or accession may overlap and/or relate to materials found in other accessions or initially processed materials. For example, correspondence may be found in all or only some groupings. In order to locate all relevant material within this collection, researchers may need to consult each accession.
Researchers should also note that similar materials can be arranged differently in each accession, depending on how the material is organized upon receipt or during initial processing. For instance, correspondence is one accession may be arranged alphabetically, while correspondence in another accession is arranged chronologically.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The records have been acquired through occasional transfers from the Office of the President.
Accruals
Continued transfers of records from the Office of the President are expected indefinitely.
Existence and Location of Copies
Selected items are available online in the UO Office of the President records in Oregon Digital.
