Scope and Contents
The Bond and Associates Landscape Architects Records contain residential and commercial projects that Lloyd Bond completed during the life of his practice (1950s – late 1990s). While he served as a consultant for some national projects, Lloyd primarily worked in the Pacific Northwest, Idaho and California.
The files contain notes, sketches, photographs and diagrams that reveal his observations and design approach to landscape architecture as well as planting plans and construction documents. The scope of his work included churches, parks, elementary schools, hospitals, the U of O campus, post offices, residential sites, large PUDs or Planned Unit Developments, as well as commercial projects for retailers like KMART and Albertson’s.
There is evidence that he returned regularly to check on the growth of his landscapes and maintained long-term relationships with his clients. Some files include relevant newspaper clippings of real estate listings or client obituaries. Others include photos or personal notes from clients and their families enjoying their landscape.
The Bond and Associates Landscape Architects Records are a valuable resource for landscape architecture students as they provide a complete record of his practice as well as local, living examples of fully-grown design projects that in some cases were completed more than 40 years ago.

Biographical / Historical
Lloyd Bond established the region’s first Landscape Architecture firm in Eugene, Oregon in 1953. During the forty years that he managed Lloyd Bond & Associates his knowledge of resource analysis, environmental planning and design helped to create a variety of landscapes throughout Oregon as well as in Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska.
A native of Oregon, Lloyd was born near Harrisburg. His great-great-grandfather the Reverend John Bond, a Baptist minister, and great grandfather Solomon Bond, along with 30 family members and relatives, traveled the Oregon Trail by wagon train. They arrived in Oregon City in September 1853. In 1903 Lloyd’s grandfather and grandmother, Austin and Louise Bond, purchased a two hundred and eighty-nine acre farm located just east of Harrisburg on Bond Butte Road. Lloyd’s parents, Frank and Madge Bond, later purchased the farm and it is still owned by the family today. The family dispersed throughout the Willamette Valley and Solomon Bond and Hulda Bond homesteaded a farm about one mile northeast of the present town of Halsey.
Lloyd attended Harrisburg High School in the old three story wood construction building which housed both the High School and the elementary school. The peak enrollment in the high school at the time was 99 students. He later graduated from University of Oregon, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture in 1949. His earliest professional experience was working for Clair Heilman, a Seattle-base Landscape Architect, in 1942. After graduating from the University of Oregon, Lloyd worked with a firm in Colorado Springs, Colorado and later returned to Oregon to establish his own firm. He is a registered Landscape Architect in Oregon and Washington.
After more than ten years with his own practice, Lloyd returned to school to expand his skills and attended Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design where he earned a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture in 1970.
Lloyd has been a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (“ASLA”) since 1959 and became an elected fellow in 1974. He served on the ASLA’s Board of Trustees from 1974-1981 and was a Member of the Executive Committee for the Pacific Northwest Chapter from 1959-1973. Lloyd has been a Member of the Executive Committee of the ASLA’s Oregon Chapter since 1974 and a Professional Affiliate of the Southwestern Oregon Chapter of the American Institute of Architects since 1953. He managed his own firm for 40 years.
Lloyd’s experience includes multi-story building site developments, office and housing complexes, residences and park projects. His areas of specialty are resource analysis and environmental planning, urban design, and reviewing changes in our contemporary landscape. The scope of his work includes churches, parks, elementary schools, hospitals, the U of O campus, post offices, residential sites, large PUDs or Planned Unit Developments, as well as commercial projects for retailers like KMART and Albertson’s.
