Ara W. McLaughlin was born on 21 December 1873. At the age of twenty-four, McLaughlin volunteered as a soldier for the United States in the Spanish-American War. Beginning his journey from his home in Oregon City, Oregon, McLaughlin traveled down the Pacific coast by way of train.
