Biographical/Historical note
The Johnson-Bushnell collection is comprised of the papers of two families, joined by the marriage of Horatio Van Veighton Johnson to Mary J. Bushnell in 1850. H. V. V. Johnson (1825-1901), a physician from Indiana, moved his family west after a typhoid epidemic struck that state. They settled in McMinnville, Oregon, later moving to Portland. Johnson is a direct line descendent of Rev. Robert Johnson of England who settled in New Haven in 1636.
Also represented are Clarissa F. Johnson Woods (sister of Horatio) and her husband, Isaac F. Woods (married 1851), and his family. Isaac F. Woods, a teacher originally from Massachusetts, also moved west, settling with his family in Stockton, California in 1852.
In addition, other people who appear in the collection are: Gurdon Collins Johnson, father of Horatio; Esther Ann Johnson Koontz, sister; Julia and Isabella Johnson, daughters; and Julia Bushnell Herreck, sister of Mary J. Bushnell Johnson and second wife of Horatio. Letters also appear from Samuel T. Woods, father of Isaac.
