Scope and Contents

Correspondence comprises about one third of the collection and is arranged alphabetically by person. Major correspondents include Elearnor and Hugh Evans, J.W. Hardcastle, Dorothy Irving-Bell, Rolf Klep, Dr. Thomas C. Poulter, and explorer Captain Finn Ronne.

Of special interest is the series of Antarctic information, which includes newsletters and expedition reports. These provide announcements of scientific discoveries and a record of daily polar life as well as local humor and news of parties stationed in Antarctica.

The collection also includes an incomplete manuscript of a book on Antarctica, tearsheets, and other printed material, and memorabilia.

A separate section of artwork contains an interesting eries of cigarette cards from the London Cigarette Card Company.

In addition, there are annual reports and other information from the Arctic Institute of North America and records of the Ottar M. Dahl Polar Collection of books and journals which were also a gift to the University of Oregon Library.

Photographs in the collection include one box of prints and slides, mostly related to Antarctica and polar exploration.

Biographical / Historical

Ottar M. Dahl, a native of Astoria, Oreogn and retired West Coast distributor for Toyota, was an avid collector of materials relating to Antarctica. As his interest in collecting became more serious he began to write to explorers and their familiar seeking information and materials about Antarctica.
