Scope and Contents
The collection contains correspondence, manuscript material, labor, prison and housing subject files and publications, notebooks (journals), scrapbooks and photographs.
The correspondence series is arranged chronologically and by title, from 1915-1968, and largely concerns the projects Hoyem was working on. There is a small section of family correspondence regarding the family bakery and the mining industry in Ishpeming, Michigan, and a section of form letters from the National Committee on Prisons and Prison Labor (NCPPL).
The manuscript series includes drafts and a published version of of Hoyem's book, "How to Do Business with the U.S. Government," drafts and copies of articles, essays and speeches by Hoyem, lecture material from the courses Hoyem taught at Georgetown University and overseas in Turkey and Thailand, manuscripts by others (mainly labor related), and class material from Hoyem's time as a student at Columbia University. Manuscript material is organized by title of work and multiple titles may be housed in one folder.
This series also contains files on the National Committee on Prisons and Labor (including research material on early prison reform measures), U.S. Operations Mission (USOM), labor, housing and other subject files from Hoyem's years consulting with labor groups and housing organizations. The labor files are organized largely by agency.
The series containing printed matter includes press releases and articles by Hoyem, issues of Chester Wright's Labor Letter (1934-1948) for which Hoyem was the vice president and editor for thirteen years, the National Industrial Administration Proceedings (1933-1934), and other labor, housing, and prison related newsletters, memos and publications. This section is organized by title of work or agency.
The photograph series contains photographs taken by Hoyem when travelling or working in Europe, the Middle East, and South East Asia and from Hoyem's time as a student at Columbia. Subjects include prisons, POWs, Samuel Gompers and labor related subjects. Also included here is a leather book titled "School of Dental and Oral Surgery, Columbia University," containing typed pages and some photographs.
Also included in the collection are notebooks (journals by Hoyem, 1957-1961), scrapbooks, Columbia yearbooks, and published books.
