Scope and Contents note
The D’Arcy papers contains a hand-written manuscript of D’Arcy’s family history as well as a typed copy of the family memoir to which D’Arcy’s daughter, Daisy Sanford, contributed. The collection is limited in scope to memories of this 1845 journey – memories recorded in the late 1930s, when D’Arcy was an elderly woman. Topics include housing, food, drink, and medicines, Oregon City in the 1840s and 1850s, social life, courting customs, the building of the first bridge over the Clackamas River in 1852, the founding of McMinnville College (Linfield College), and schools in early Oregon.

Biographical Note
Marianne, often “Mary,” Hunsaker D’Arcy (1842-1932) came from a family of twelve children. Born in Illinois, D’Arcy left for Oregon when she was three and a half or four years old. Her family settled in Fruit Hill, near Oregon City, where D’Arcy’s grandfather purchased land for a family home.
