Scope and Contents
The collection contains diaries and letters Wichman kept during his military service, and during a voyage around the world in 1901.
The nine diaries and four letters give a detailed account of Wichman's experiences as ordinary seaman and as enlisted man in the Philippines during the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars, and on a subsequent voyage around the world.

Biographical / Historical
Frederick W. Wichman served in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War, 1898-1901. He was first a seaman aboard the U.S.S. Harvard, from June to September 1898, and then served as enlisted man, in Company B, 30th U. S. Volunteer Infantry, from July 1899 to February 1901. He kept diaries during his service, and also during a subsequent voyage around the world in 1901.
