Scope and Contents

The photostat journals include autobiographical notes and remarks on the political history of Oregon, 1862-1878; governor's appointment book, 1859-1862; scrapbook of political clippings. Loose papers include a letter of recommendation, 1885, written by Oregon Supreme Court justice W. W. Thayer and a transcription of a personal family history written by Whiteaker. There is also a hand written draft of a piece on house bill 351, concerning proposed Native American Reservations.

Biographical / Historical

John Whiteaker (1820-1902), a Democrat, was Oregon's first state governor, 1859-1862. In private life he was a storekeeper, hence his sobriquet, "Old soap, socks, and pickles."
