Biographical / Historical
Charles Jared Ingersoll (1782 –1862) was an American lawyer and Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Among other issues, Ingersoll wrote passionately on issues of Manifest Destiny and the "Oregon question". Along with fellow expansionists, Ingersoll argued that the United States should assert its clam to all of Oregon, from the 42nd parallel to 54-40.
In 1846, England offered the 49th parallel as a dividing line. A few weeks later, both parties signed a treaty bringing an end to the Oregon question.
