Scope and Contents
The first of the seven series is the Membership Files. In these files, individual folders of individual clubs can be found. There are also folders representing the clubs who withdrew membership. The end of this series contains various folders concerning the membership of the Federation, including member lists, miscellaneous correspondence, and member applications. A folder concerning correspondence concerning the formation of various committees in the organization completes the series.
The second series is the Federation Minutes and Resolutions. This series is divided by year and contains correspondence in the same folders as the minutes or resolutions. The dates spanning this series are from 1937 to 1952.
The third series is Convention Materials. The Federation annually held conventions as a way for the various member clubs to get together and discuss issues. This series primarily focuses on the 1952 convention and contains the minutes, miscellaneous correspondence, programs and a guest book. The guest book spans the conventions from 1932 to 1952.
The fourth, fifth and sixth series all contain the records and correspondence of Federation officers. The individual series are divided into Subseries of each individual officer. The fourth series contains the Editor's Files, the fifth series is the Secretary-treasurer's Files, and the sixth series is the President's Files. The contents of these series are primarily correspondence with other officers, member clubs and specific issue related material. The sixth series also contain two miscellaneous correspondences of the vice-presidents of the Federation.
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs Records is not very organized at the folder level. Either date or subject loosely arranges the papers. The president’s files are not arranged or extensively processed as they can be found in the original folders in which the collection was received.

Biographical / Historical
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs was first proposed in November of 1931, and formally organized in Portland, Oregon on May 1, 1932 as the Western Federation of Outdoor Clubs. It is a loosely organized combination of outing clubs, most of them in the Pacific Northwest and California.
Through the years, the Federation has helped expand systems to protect nature. Its agents and members helped secure passage of the Wilderness Act. The various clubs made important contributions to the establishment of the North Cascades National Park and to the establishment of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Washington State, as well as to the establishment of various wilderness areas in the national forests of Oregon and California. In recent years, the Federation lent its help to the establishment of a national monument in the Sierra Nevada Range to protect the remainder of the Giant Sequoias.
