Abstract

The study of rhetoric and performance has been a part of the curriculum of the University of Oregon since it opened its doors in 1877; the Department of Speech also used to offer classes in radio, film, theatre study, and also dramatic performance. The bulk of the collection (1948-1999) consists of records when the Department of Speech was heavily involved with theatre performance.

The Failing and Beekman student oratory contest at the University of Oregon began with an endowment established in 1883 by Henry Failing and C.C. Beekman that awarded two yearly prizes. The collection contains collected hand-written and typed orations by students, some with notations.

Charles V. Galloway (1878-1974) served in state government, primarily in the tax department. The collection consists of letters he wrote to his family while attending Linfield College and the University of Oregon,and some other biographical materials. The collection also includes a scrapbook of his brother (Francis Galloway) documenting his college debate career at UO and social activities.

High School Debating League records

Wallace McCamant papers

Abstract Wallace McCamant came to Oregon in 1890 and practiced law. Later, he was appointed to the Oregon Supreme Court in 1916, but resigned in 1918, and resumed private law practice. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1920, and nominated Calvin Coolidge for the vice-presidency. In 1925, Coolidge nominated him to the Circuit Court of Appeals, a nomination that failed confirmation because of opposition by Senator Hiram Johnson.
