Abstract Joel Palmer (1810-1881) began his political career in Indiana, where he served as a state legislator until he came to Oregon in 1847. Shortly after his arrival, Palmer became Superintendent of Indian Affairs, a post he held until 1857. Charles Orlando Porter was a lawyer in Oregon and a congressional representative of the fourth district of Oregon from 1957-1961. The collection contains his political and congressional papers from 1954-1961. Included are materials on bills introduced in the 85th and 86th Congresses. The majority of the collection consists of subject files. Porter’s 1954 campaign materials are also included.
