James Suydam Polhemus (1852-1930) became an engineer and worked for the U. S. Army Engineers in Texas, in the Great Lakes region, in California, and later settled in Oregon in the 1880s, where he engineered the jetties at Yaquina and Coos Bay harbors. The collection (1864-1924) contains family and business correspondence, and a letterpress copy book consisting of the outgoing correspondence of the Alsea Packing Company.

Edith Ballinger Price (1897-1997) was a noted author and illustrator of children's books. She was a frequent contributor to St. Nicholas and a founder of the Girl Scouts' Brownie program. The collection includes a range of materials related to her publications and is noted for the series of sketchbooks, 1902-1940s that document her evolution as an artist, and the complete set of illustrations for My Lady Lee.

Abstract

Prichard left Polk County, Iowa in 1852; was in Marysville, Calif., in 1861; Union, Oregon, 1865-1867; and Rye Valley, Oregon, 1868-1869. In 1865, he built a toll road from Union to Express Ranch, Oregon, an investment that failed. His very occasional letters to a brother, Amos, and to other relatives in Iowa give a bare account of his experiences.
