Major Benjamin Alvord of Fort Vancouver, Washington Territory, wrote a letter dated July 16, 1863 to J.M. Sutton of Jacksonville, regarding fighting in the Rogue River Valley. The collection contains the letter, which references Jesse and Lindsay Applegate.

The Alanson Hinman papers comprise thirty-two letters and an account book. The correspondence dates from 1872 to 1900 and concerns Indian training schools, proposed changes in the charter of Pacific University, and personal issues. J.M. Sutton enquired, gathered information, and wrote an account of Rogue River Indian War of 1855; it is only known that he wrote the account, not that he participated in the war. The collection (1863) contains Sutton's account of the war, and a letter from Sutton, addressed to "Sir," explaining that he had "gleaned" his account from "enquires made."
