Ruth Mountaingrove videotape autobiography

Abstract

Ruth Mountaingrove is a photographer, writer and artist who moved to Oregon in 1971, settling in communes and eventually co-founding Rootworks, a lesbian community in Southern Oregon. The collection consists of 21 VHS videotapes of Mountaingrove relating the story of her life by talking, dancing, and singing.

Sylvester Mowry (1830-1871), became a commissioned soldier, owned mining claims, was the founder of Mowry, Arizona, and was arrested and imprisoned on suspicion of being a southern sympathizer. The collection contains a a letter written July 18, 1853, to Edward J. Bicknall, from Mowry.

She was involved in the American Civil Liberties Unions, the League of Women Voters, and the Lane County Democratic Party. She was an activist opponent against EWEB's usage of nuclear power, and she was a key individual in stopping the construction of a $234 million nuclear power plant near Big Creek between Florence and Yachats in 1970.
