Applegate, O. C. (Oliver Cromwell), 1845-1938

Abstract Oliver Cromwell Applegate (1845-1938), the son of Lindsay and Elizabeth Applegate (Applegate Trail pioneers), spent his career working with Oregon Indians. He was a subagent with the Indian Service at Yainax, and during the Modoc War he served as an interpreter and a scout. In 1873, he became a U.S. Commissioner, and in 1898 was appointed Klamath Indian Agent. Abstract

Samuel Colver (1815-1891) came to Oregon in 1850, where he served as an Indian Agent and U.S. Marshall, and helped found the community of Phoenix, Oregon. The Colver Family Papers contain correspondence among family members, and some letters to Oliver C. Applegate, 1869-1870. The papers include historical and genealogical notes, and reminiscences of O.A. Stearns, including information on Samuel Colver.

The Oregon Militia, 1st Brigade, 1st Regiment, Company A, which organized during the American Civil War, was referred to as the "Mountain Rangers." The collection (1863-1867) contains journals, correspondence, muster rolls, and information regarding the origin and dissolution of the Mountain Rangers.
