Biographical / Historical
Chartered as the Panama Railroad Company by the Legislature of New York, April 7, 1849. The Act of Sept. 26, 1950 (64 Stat. 1038, Public law 841, 81st Cong.) took effect on July 1, 1951, by virtue of Executive order 10263 of June 29, 1951. That act reorganized the Panama Canal enterprise as a whole, changed the name "Panama Railroad Company" to read "Panama Canal Company." The company was superseded by the Panama Canal Commission in 1979.
