Abstract The genesis of the UO Department of Anthropology can be traced to the arrival of Dr. Luther S. Cressman in 1929, who was hired to develop advanced research in sociology and to teach social anthropology; by 1935-1936, Cressman had established himself as an active archaeologist, and he became the first, and sole, member of a newly created Department of Anthropology.
